From Nomadic Beginnings to a Brick-and-Mortar Haven: The Story of Berntson Bhattacharjee

A chance encounter brought together Lovisa Berntson Vit and India Bhattacharjee, two art enthusiasts, in 2019. Their shared passion for the art world quickly blossomed into a strong friendship, paving the way for a collaborative journey.

The Birth of a Vision: From Temporary Spaces to a Permanent Home

The duo, both Swedish gallerists based in London, embarked on an exciting adventure in 2020. Starting with an experimental exhibition in the seaside town of Skänor, Sweden, they transformed a simple idea into a life-changing project. Armed with an adventurous spirit and the works of 11 artists, they hit the road, paving the way for what would become Berntson Bhattacharjee.

Their nomadic beginnings laid the foundation for their gallery’s unique approach, where risk-taking became their guiding principle. Their first show, “Staying Sane,” held in Stockholm during the pandemic, was a resounding success, showcasing the talents of emerging artists like Mary Stephenson and Katy Stubbs. This initial triumph proved their ability to connect with audiences and nurture the careers of promising artists.

The success of “Staying Sane” ignited their passion, prompting them to host a series of shows across London and Sweden. These experiences solidified their determination to establish a permanent space where they could nurture their artists and grow their vision.

Building a Legacy: Berntson Bhattacharjee’s Permanent Space

Their vision materialized last April when Berntson Bhattacharjee opened its doors in London’s bustling Fitzrovia neighborhood. The gallery, housed in a repurposed garage, boasts a spacious 2,200-square-foot venue. Their commitment to transformative art is reflected in the gallery’s unique design, reminiscent of a theater, with fabric drapes creating a curtain-like effect.

The gallery’s inaugural exhibition, “Modus Operandi,” showcased the work of Yulia Iosilzon, the artist who graced their first solo show in Stockholm. The exhibition serves as a testament to Berntson Bhattacharjee’s dedication to its artists, offering them a platform to grow and shine.

A Home for Emerging Artists: Expanding Horizons

The decision to open a permanent space in Fitzrovia was a natural progression for the gallerists. This vibrant area provided the perfect setting to continue their mission of connecting art with its audience. The gallery’s ethos of placing art in easily accessible locations was a natural extension of their nomadic journey.

Now, after a successful first year, Berntson Bhattacharjee is poised for continued growth. Their commitment to nurturing the careers of their artists is evident in their upcoming exhibitions, such as the solo presentation of Jessie Stevenson at Stockholm’s Market Art Fair and the group exhibition “Smörgårdsbord,” featuring prominent Nordic artists. With a strong foundation and a clear vision, Berntson Bhattacharjee is ready to embark on exciting new adventures, transforming the art world with their unwavering commitment to emerging artists.
