Artesian, the name itself evokes a sense of wonder and sophistication. This legendary bar, nestled within the Langham Hotel just north of Oxford Circus, has consistently been crowned the No. 1 bar in the world for the past four years. Its reputation precedes it, drawing in crowds eager to experience its unmatched cocktail artistry.
A Master’s Legacy
The mastermind behind Artesian’s global acclaim is Alex Kratena, whose passion and talent have left an indelible mark on the cocktail scene. While he may not be a constant fixture behind the bar, traveling the world to share his expertise, Kratena has cultivated a team of exceptional bartenders, led by the brilliant Simone Caporale. Caporale, often referred to as Kratena’s “No. 2”, is a true maestro in his own right, showcasing incredible knowledge, efficiency, and a charming sense of humor.
On my last three visits, Caporale greeted me with warmth and expertise, remembering me six months later. It’s evident he embodies the true essence of a perfect host.
An Atmosphere of Opulence
The interior of Artesian is a testament to the hotel’s luxury. Gleaming marble, dazzling lighting, and extravagant furniture create a lavish setting. It undeniably caters to a high-society crowd, but its welcoming atmosphere extends to all, regardless of background. This inclusive spirit adds to the bar’s allure, drawing in a diverse, international clientele.
A Symphony of Flavors
The service at Artesian is impeccable, whether you’re seated at the bar or served by the attentive staff. For the ultimate cocktail experience, aim to secure a spot at the bar itself, or perhaps visit in the afternoon when the crowds are thinner.
The cocktails, the true stars of the show, are presented on an extravagant menu, each creation meticulously crafted and beautifully presented. While the bar also serves classic cocktails, executed flawlessly, the adventurous spirit of Artesian shines through in its innovative creations.
I sampled a trio of signature cocktails:
- “Chameleon Crystals”: A vibrant mix of Tanqueray 10, pisco, lime, perilla, chilli, and soy. The presentation is a marvel, arriving in a treasure chest-like box that emits a bright glow. The cocktail itself is a harmonious blend of sweet and sour, though I didn’t discern the soy flavor I expected.
- “Fast Money Comes at a Dangerous Price”: This intriguing cocktail features Johnnie Walker Gold, chamomile, vetiver, sandalwood, and kombucha. It’s a unique concoction with a subtle woody and floral aroma, reminiscent of a secret garden potion.
- “Last Wish”: This was my absolute favorite, a complex and bold combination of Bulleit rye, calvados, Armagnac, amber, and essensia. It’s a true masterpiece, an explosion of flavor that’s sure to impress any cocktail enthusiast.
A Farewell and a New Chapter
Artesian is more than just a bar, it’s an experience. The exceptional service, the opulent ambiance, and the breathtaking cocktails create an unforgettable evening.
In a recent announcement, Alex Kratena and Simone Caporale have both left Artesian. While this news is undoubtedly significant, it doesn’t diminish the bar’s legacy or its future potential. The world awaits to see what these two masters will create next.
Artesian remains a captivating cocktail destination, a testament to the ingenuity of its former masters, and a space that continues to enchant with its unwavering commitment to excellence.
