A Collaboration of Design and History
The Benugo restaurant group, responsible for catering at the museum since 2012, sought to enhance the dining experience at this unique location. They tapped Softroom’s expertise to revitalize the space, making it more inviting and accessible for visitors. The restaurant, situated behind the iconic Reading Room, wraps around a portion of the curved wall, creating a more open and welcoming atmosphere.
Softroom’s approach was inspired by the historic elegance of the Reading Room, contrasting it with the minimalist aesthetic of the Great Court. The architects aimed to create a space that would seamlessly blend these two distinct styles, creating a unique dining experience for visitors.
A Space for Every Diner
The brief called for a multifaceted dining experience, with various spaces offering different levels of privacy and views. The architects responded by meticulously dividing the floor plan into distinct zones.
A new entrance, strategically aligned with the center of the restaurant, accentuates the symmetry of the Great Court. It leads to a charming charcuterie counter, a perfect starting point for the dining journey. Here, visitors can choose from a variety of delicious offerings while enjoying the lively atmosphere.
For those who prefer a more social setting, there’s a communal area with tall tables, offering a front-row seat to the culinary theatre unfolding in the open kitchen.
