Angel Central Shopping Centre, a bustling hub in Islington, London, has undergone a dramatic transformation, becoming a top destination for shopping and leisure in North London. This exciting revamp was spearheaded by CBRE Global Investors, the centre’s owner, who envisioned a more modern and vibrant space for shoppers and visitors alike.
A Vision Takes Shape
In June 2018, CBRE presented its plans to Islington Borough Council, outlining a major overhaul of the centre. Initially, the proposal included removing a beloved angel wings sculpture from the outdoor space. However, after receiving feedback, CBRE swiftly adjusted their plans, ensuring that this iconic landmark would remain a cherished feature of the mall.
Investing in the Future
The transformation of Angel Central was a multi-phase project, with the first stage focusing on enhancing the basement car park. This involved a significant investment of £11m ($14.22m), transforming the space into a vibrant addition for retail and entertainment. The second phase, completed in March 2021, focused on the centre’s public areas, adding modern lighting, sleek ceilings, stylish pavings, and updated balustrading. These upgrades created a contemporary atmosphere, inviting visitors to enjoy the renewed space.
A Retail and Leisure Paradise
Nestled near Angel tube station, just two miles from the City of London, Angel Central boasts a diverse range of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. Opened in 2002, the centre originally housed a mix of high-street names and a cinema complex. Today, visitors can enjoy a broader selection of leading retail brands, including H&M, GAP, Calzedonia, Monsoon, Accessorize, Oasis, Rituals, Argos, Paperchase, MUJI, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, and L’Occitane.
A Feast for the Senses
The centre also boasts a variety of dining options, from casual bites to sit-down restaurants. Jones & Sons, a popular British restaurant and cocktail bar, has been a welcomed addition since 2018, offering a vibrant space to enjoy delicious food and drinks. Saint Espresso and Pelicana, a South Korean fried chicken brand, have joined the mix, offering even more culinary delights. Visitors can also choose from established favourites like Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Hotel Chocolat, Itsu, Pret, and Wagamama.
A Focus on Wellbeing
Angel Central has taken a proactive approach to wellbeing, creating a space that prioritises the health and happiness of its visitors. This commitment has been recognised internationally with a 2-star rating from Fitwel, making it one of only three shopping centres worldwide to receive this prestigious award. The centre also received the Fitwel Highest-Scoring Projects Award in the Retail Building category.
A Collaborative Effort
This impressive transformation was the result of a collaborative effort, involving a team of experts in various fields. RED Construction played a key role in bringing the project to life, working closely with development manager Queensberry. Haskoll Architects and TconcepT designed the centre’s modern look, while FRA Creative brought their expertise to the wayfinding and signage.
An Enduring Legacy
The renovation of Angel Central has created a space that is both welcoming and inspiring. The centre continues to attract new retailers and dining options, providing a diverse and dynamic experience for visitors. From the iconic angel wings sculpture to the newly added pedestrian link bridge and al fresco dining area, Angel Central is a testament to the power of vision and collaboration.
