Imagine being trapped on a plane, the air thick and stifling, with no escape. This was the nightmare reality for passengers on a Thai Airways flight from London to Bangkok.
A Flight Turned Nightmare
A Boeing 777, destined for Bangkok, was grounded at Heathrow Airport due to a malfunctioning air conditioning system. The date was July 25th, and the flight was supposed to be a journey of comfort and excitement. However, it quickly transformed into a nightmarish ordeal.
Footage captured the chaos inside the aircraft as hundreds of passengers struggled to cope with the unbearable heat. They fanned themselves desperately, their faces flushed and sweating, trying to catch a breath of fresh air.
The air inside the plane felt like a sauna with no escape, a student named Warawalan Maksaen described. “It was like torture,” she said, “You can leave a sauna anytime you want, but we were stuck.”
Two Hours of Agony
The situation went from bad to worse as the passengers were forced to wait inside the aircraft for two hours while the airline attempted to fix the problem. The take-off time was delayed by two hours, but the air conditioning remained dysfunctional.
With no escape from the sweltering heat, passengers grew increasingly anxious. Food and water were not provided, adding to the sense of helplessness. Some passengers even suffered panic attacks, overwhelmed by the heat and lack of ventilation.
Confusion and Lack of Support
After two hours of stifling heat, the decision was made to cancel the flight due to the unavailability of technicians during the airport’s curfew. Passengers were given the option of sleeping in the airport or taking a bus to find a hotel.
The airline’s response was lackluster. The bus service was poorly coordinated, leaving passengers waiting for hours for transport. The hotel provided by the airline was overbooked, with only eight rooms available despite the airline’s promises.
Warawalan, who was traveling alone, had to find her own accommodation at 3 am after the hotel prioritized families and groups.
The passengers were left confused and frustrated, seeking answers about compensation and rescheduled flights, but the airline did not offer any clear explanations.
A Continued Nightmare
The next day, the ordeal continued as the passengers were once again forced to wait on the plane. Despite the air conditioning being fixed, the plane’s engine wouldn’t start, causing further delays and frustration.
After hours of waiting, the passengers were finally allowed to reboard the plane and eventually depart. But by this time, many of them were exhausted and deeply disappointed by the airline’s handling of the situation.
