A London Pub with a Garden That Doesn’t Just Talk the Talk

Welcome to The Culpeper, a charming pub in Aldgate, London, that’s quietly making waves with its delicious food. It’s not just about the food, though. It’s a story of fresh ingredients, a commitment to quality, and a touch of whimsy that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a hidden gem.

This pub is a haven for those seeking a taste of the good life. The Culpeper boasts a rooftop garden where they grow much of what you’ll find on their menu. Imagine being able to pick fresh herbs and vegetables for your meal, just steps away from your table. It’s a beautiful concept that feels both innovative and comforting.

Now, you might be thinking, “How can they possibly source all their ingredients from a tiny rooftop garden in the heart of London?” And it’s true, not every dish comes from their rooftop oasis. However, The Culpeper doesn’t just pay lip service to sustainability and freshness. They use their garden as a source of inspiration, infusing their dishes with the vibrant flavors of fresh, local produce.

Food with a Flourish

Let’s talk about the food. Every bite is a journey for your taste buds, highlighting the freshest ingredients in creative ways. We sampled a warm goat’s cheese salad, where the cheese sat majestically atop a bed of leaves that actually tasted like they were grown in the earth.

Then there was the gnocchi, a symphony of wild garlic, watercress, and pistachio that felt like it was doing wonders for our health.

And the main courses! The pork chop was so rich and flavorful, it was practically singing. And the bon bon – a fried cake of pulled pork – was a delightful surprise, proving that The Culpeper has a chef with a real passion for pushing culinary boundaries.

A Place to Unwind

The atmosphere at The Culpeper is as warm and inviting as the food. With its bright dining room, bathed in natural light, it feels like a cozy escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The tables are tucked away in secluded booths or alcoves, creating an intimate setting for you and your dining companions. It’s a place where you can truly savor the food and wine, without feeling like you’re part of a bustling scene.

The Culpeper

Beyond the Food

The Culpeper is not just about the food, though. They offer a delightful selection of cocktails, both classic and house-made, and they have a real passion for natural and organic wines.

We indulged in a Honey Whisky Fizz and a Pinky Gonzalez, both refreshingly delicious. And the 2020 Montepulciano we were recommended was a delightful surprise, with its subtle hint of fizz.

The Culpeper

More Than Just a Pub

In a world where everyone seems to be jumping on the “sustainable” bandwagon, The Culpeper stands out as a shining example of what it truly means to be mindful and creative. They’ve created a space that’s both stylish and relaxed, where the food is delicious, the wine is superb, and the atmosphere is welcoming.

The Culpeper is a reminder that simplicity can be truly extraordinary, a place where good food, good wine, and good company come together to create something truly special.
