Ever wondered what British food is like? Get ready to join me on a journey through the heart of England, where I discovered more than just the classic “full English.” This is a tale of adventure, laughter, and a whole lot of bacon (and beans, of course!).
From Big Ben to Bed and Breakfasts
My European adventure began with a five-week whirlwind tour, and the star of the show was undoubtedly England. Armed with a rental car, my brother, and my adventurous spirit (and my poppy, who did all the driving!), we set off on a grand circle tour.
London
, with its iconic red phone booths and the imposing Big Ben, provided a stunning introduction to the trip.
After a few nights in the picturesque suburb of Archway, we ventured eastward to Canterbury. Our first taste of true British hospitality came in the form of a quaint bed and breakfast. This was no ordinary Airbnb – it served a hearty full English breakfast, complete with bacon, sausages, eggs, and all the trimmings. My brother and I were instantly smitten.
From Stonehenge to Salisbury: Breakfast on the Move
Our journey continued west, taking us past the legendary Stonehenge (though we opted to admire it from a distance, as the tour prices were a bit steep!). Next, we found ourselves in Salisbury, where another delightful bed and breakfast awaited. We couldn’t resist the temptation of another full English breakfast, this time with a Salisbury twist. Our next stop was
Oxford
, where we enjoyed our chosen breakfast at a charming pub – a personal favorite.
Lakeside Beauty and a Scottish Detour
The beauty of the Lake District captivated us as we travelled north. It was truly the most enchanting place we encountered on our trip. I highly recommend adding it to your travel list! From the serene lakes to the rolling hills, it was a landscape worthy of a fairytale.
Our journey took us even further north, into the rugged beauty of Scotland. We traded our beloved full English breakfast for a taste of traditional haggis, a Scottish delicacy. Winter’s chill added a touch of magic to our journey, transforming the landscape with a blanket of snow. We swapped our sunny bikini photos for cozy scarves and steaming hot food, a perfect trade-off.
Full English Farewell and Beyond
As we made our way back south towards
London
, we savored numerous full English breakfasts, indulging in this quintessential British tradition. By the time we reached the Channel Tunnel, heading for Paris, we had had our fill of eggs and bacon (at least for a while!). Our journey continued with a visit to my uncle, taking us across several more countries, each offering its own unique charm.
England: A Lasting Impression
England holds a special place in my heart. Perhaps it was the thrill of exploring a country outside of Australia, my homeland. Maybe it was the joy of traveling across the entire country, experiencing its diverse landscapes and captivating culture. Or maybe, just maybe, it was the sheer delight of the full English breakfast.
