Have you ever heard of St. James’s? It’s one of those London neighborhoods that seems shrouded in mystery. You might know the name, but you probably don’t know much about the place. It’s a place where private members’ clubs reign supreme, where you might feel out of place if your last name isn’t fancy and your bank account isn’t overflowing. Or maybe that’s just me.
But don’t let that impression fool you. St. James’s is a charming corner of the city, and it’s home to some of London’s most legendary hospitality – including the DUKES London hotel.
A Hotel with History and Charm
DUKES is more than just a hotel; it’s a London institution that exudes charm and discretion. Despite its fame, DUKES feels like a hidden gem, a secret whispered among those in the know. You won’t stumble upon it by accident – it’s tucked away just off the main thoroughfare, nestled between Green Park, Berry Bros. & Rudd, and Lock & Co. Hatters. Even if you did stumble across it, you might not recognize it as one of London’s finest boutique hotels. And if you’re stumbling out after experiencing what DUKES is most famous for, you might not even remember where you were! But we’ll get to Alessandro and his martini trolley in a moment.
This independent hotel has been a fixture since 1908, maintaining a low-key charm and a compact yet cozy atmosphere. With only 90 rooms and suites, it has an intimate, almost private club feel. The staff knows many guests by name, creating a welcoming and familiar atmosphere for regulars and newcomers alike. Oh, and did I mention they welcome dogs?
A Taste of Old England
Condé Nast Traveler describes entering DUKES as a “parody of Englishness”. If you’re looking for that classic “fantasy London” of cobblestone streets and red phone boxes, DUKES delivers. The Luxury Editor compares it to “arriving at a stately home”, calling the entrance one of the “most iconic in the capital”. The cascading flowers on the facade and the charming courtyard make you feel like you’re stepping into a grand aunt’s home rather than a hotel.
The rooms are comfortable and stylish, although they might not be cutting-edge. But that doesn’t mean they lack anything. They’re equipped with modern amenities like large TVs, workspaces, and powerful showers. They’re simply rooms that fit perfectly into a smart, Victorian-era building.
The Art of the Martini
There’s no question about it: DUKES is a martini lover’s paradise. And when it comes to martinis, shaken or stirred is a serious matter. DUKES has a cocktail pedigree that any bar would envy, and its bar is said to be the inspiration for James Bond’s iconic drink. The famous martini trolley is a sight to behold, and you might be lucky enough to have your martini personally crafted by head bartender Alessandro Palazzi. But whichever white-jacketed expert you encounter, your drink will be exceptional.
For those who can’t decide between gin or vodka, there’s the Vesper, a tribute to Ian Fleming’s literary legacy. This cocktail combines both gin and vodka, poured straight from the freezer in a way that will leave you breathless (and maybe a little regretful). The bar has a strict two-drink limit, which is a blessing in disguise as you approach the end of your second cocktail. The Telegraph calls the bar “as fine a venue as ever”, noting that while the cocktails “aren’t cheap”, they are “worth it”.
A Solid Dining Experience
While the bar steals the show, DUKES’ restaurant, GBR – Great British Dining Room, is a solid option for a delicious and comforting meal. The menu celebrates British ingredients and classics, serving up high-quality and flavorful dishes. The sourcing is impeccable, the cooking is spot-on, and the menu is packed with dishes you’ll crave. While some items might seem predictable – risotto, scampi, steaks – the execution is often surprising.
The risotto, for example, is made with Hodmedod’s grains instead of rice. The scampi is made with monkfish and served with a bold caper and parsley mayonnaise. The steaks are perfectly sourced and grilled to perfection, as you’d expect. Yet, despite the quality, the restaurant lacks a bit of spark, a sense of identity. You’ll have a fine meal, but compared to the iconic bar and the hotel’s long history of exceptional hospitality, the restaurant feels a little understated.
A Perfect Start to Your Day
Breakfast at DUKES is a treat for the senses. While it offers modern options like peanut butter, banana, and cacao porridge, it mostly features classic breakfast favorites, high-quality pastries, and seriously good meat, including Bury black pudding. And it’s served until a very generous 11 am.
Explore London’s Treasures
From DUKES, you’re within walking distance of some of London’s most famous attractions. The Royal Academy and Green Park are just minutes away. A short stroll will take you to Fortnum & Mason, Waterstones, the bustling shops of Regent Street and Oxford Street, and the elegant boutiques of Savile Row and Jermyn Street. No matter what your interests are, you’ll find something to explore within a 20-minute radius of this centrally located hotel.
The relative calm and quiet of DUKES make it an oasis of tranquility in the heart of London’s excitement.
More Than Just a Hotel
DUKES is a unique and unforgettable experience that blends the charm of old England with modern amenities and exceptional service. Whether you’re seeking a luxurious escape, a world-class martini, or a cozy retreat in the heart of the city, DUKES is a true hidden gem.
