London Hotels: A Travel Writer’s Picks – From the Best to the Worst

Get ready to dive into the world of London hotels, from the truly magical to the downright dreadful! As a seasoned travel writer, I’ve experienced a wide range of hotels in the capital, from luxurious suites to budget-friendly options. I’ve stayed as a journalist, a paying guest, and even as a competition winner. I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the downright bizarre. So, let’s explore some of the hotels that have left a lasting impression, both positive and negative.

London Hotel Horror Stories: What to Avoid

Not every hotel stay is a dream come true. Some hotels, despite their initial charm, fall short of expectations. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and relive some of the most memorable (for all the wrong reasons) London hotel experiences.

Rough Luxe, King’s Cross: This converted Georgian townhouse boasted a “beauty is subjective” design philosophy, which translated to peeling wallpaper, chipped paint, and inadequate soundproofing. The experience was more “haunted house” than luxurious stay. Now, looking back at the photos, it’s clear that Rough Luxe was a place where I’d rather not spend another night.

The Rookery, Clerkenwell: Imagine this: a historic five-star hotel where sleep is a luxury, thanks to a nearby nightclub and a vibrant street teeming with revellers. This was my experience at The Rookery after my wedding. The noise was relentless, and it made for a truly unforgettable (but not in a good way) first night as a newlywed.

The Hempel, Bayswater: This immaculate five-star boutique hotel had a minimalist ethos that didn’t extend to basic housekeeping. Dirty room service trays were left untouched, and the porter’s oversharing about a famous guest’s breakfast felt like a security breach. This hotel has also closed its doors, and perhaps it’s for the best.

Rooms at Rough Luxe — now closed — were more spooky than stylish

London Hotel Triumphs: Where to Stay

Don’t let those unfortunate experiences discourage you. London has a treasure trove of fantastic hotels to choose from. From family-friendly options to luxurious havens, there’s something for everyone. Here are a few of my favourite London hotels, each offering a unique and memorable experience.

Haymarket Hotel: This is a true gem for families. It boasts a subterranean swimming pool with a cinema screen, a snack bar, and inflatable toys for the little ones. With a telly by the bathtub, milk and cookies at bedtime, and a gifted teddy on check-in, this hotel is a child’s dream come true. It’s also a stone’s throw from the vibrant entertainment of Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.

Park Plaza Riverbank: For budget-conscious families, Park Plaza Riverbank is a fantastic choice. With Thames-view rooms for under £200 and family suites featuring bunk beds, chalkboard walls, and tepees, this hotel offers a fun and affordable stay.

London Hotel Gems: A Travel Writer’s Top Picks

Now let’s dive into the top-tier London hotels that have truly captured my heart. These are the hotels that offer exceptional service, unique design, and unforgettable experiences.

Claridge’s: This iconic hotel is a London legend. It may be pricey, but for a truly luxurious and unforgettable experience, it’s worth every penny. Having stayed at many other London grande dames, I can confidently say that Claridge’s reigns supreme.

Hotel Café Royal: This hotel wins my design award, especially for its magnificent Grill Room. Adorned with gilt and mirrors, this historic space has witnessed the lives of iconic figures like Princess Diana and Oscar Wilde.

Sofitel London Heathrow: This hotel is the perfect starting point for a London adventure. With its modern amenities and comfortable rooms, you’ll feel like your holiday has already begun.

Town Hall Hotel: This stylish and unpretentious hotel in Bethnal Green is Instagram-worthy without being overly trendy.

One Aldwych: This hotel’s afternoon tea is a Willy Wonka-inspired extravaganza that will leave you feeling like a VIP. With candy floss, champagne, and a whimsical atmosphere, it’s a truly unforgettable experience.

The Shangri-La The Shard: My London Hotel Paradise

Finally, we arrive at my ultimate London hotel favourite: the Shangri-La The Shard. Located on the top floors of the UK’s tallest building, this hotel is truly magical.

Here’s why I love the Shangri-La The Shard:

  • Spectacular views: Swimming in the pool with the clouds swirling below is an experience like no other. The panoramic views are breathtaking from every room.
  • Exceptional service: Guests are often upgraded to rooms with even better views, even though every view is already spectacular.
  • Iconic location: Staying in one of London’s most iconic buildings allows for a truly unique and memorable experience.
  • Unforgettable atmosphere: Enjoying afternoon tea at the Gong bar on the 52nd floor, overlooking the city, is an unforgettable experience.
  • Inclusive atmosphere: The hotel welcomes everyone, from afternoon tea guests to those celebrating special occasions.
  • Community focus: The hotel is committed to hiring from diverse backgrounds and offering employees the opportunity to experience the Shard themselves.

The Shangri-La The Shard is more than just a hotel; it’s an experience that embodies the spirit of London. It’s a place where you can feel the energy of the city, enjoy stunning views, and create unforgettable memories.
