The King is Back: Ian Schrager’s London EDITION

Ian Schrager, the “Hotel King,” has returned to London with a spectacular new project: the London EDITION. This stunning hotel, part of the EDITION Hotels brand in partnership with Marriott International, is housed in a majestic and historic building in the heart of London.

The London EDITION takes over the grand former Berners Street Hotel, a landmark just off Oxford Street. Originally built in 1835, the property was a collection of five luxurious townhouses with a Georgian charm. This was once the home of King Edward VII and the renowned Russian jeweler Carl Fabergé. The Ian Schrager Company has arrived in the UK with a bold statement, and the London EDITION is living proof of that.

A Blend of Classic Luxury and Modern Style

Designed by the Ian Schrager Company Design Studio and the New York-based firm Yabu Pushelberg, the London EDITION seamlessly blends classic luxury and modern lifestyle. The interiors are a celebration of eclecticism, featuring Salvador Dalí-inspired floor lamps, Christian Liaigre metal furniture, and chandeliers reminiscent of NYC’s Grand Central Station. These unique elements not only create a captivating ambiance but also pay homage to the building’s rich history.

The showstopper of the hotel is the lobby. Marble adorns the space, adding a touch of elegance, while a detailed carved ceiling frames a spaceship-like silver sphere light by Ingo Maurer. The lobby is a grand and inviting space, echoing Ian Schrager’s vision to revive the social scene of the old world. This space is designed to be seen, where work and play seamlessly blend. A Donald Judd-inspired walnut table with desktop computers coexists with a bar for cocktails and an antique billiards table. The lobby is truly a theater, where guests take center stage.

A Culinary Journey and a Gentleman’s Retreat

To the right of the lobby lies Berner’s Tavern, the restaurant helmed by London’s own Executive Chef Jason Atherton. With chestnut banquettes and surrounding artwork, the eye is drawn to the exquisite bronze chandeliers, creating an irresistible allure.

The Punch Room, located at the rear of the hotel, offers a private escape reminiscent of a classic English gentleman’s club. Fumed oak paneling, a fireplace, and the scent of leather transport you to another era. Imagine the warm glow of a fireplace, the soft murmur of conversation, and the delicate aroma of cigars and brandy – a truly sophisticated and intimate experience.

A Sanctuary of Comfort and Style

The same floor-to-ceiling wood finish graces the bedrooms. Guests can choose from dark walnut or light oak paneling to suit their preferences. Eclectic lounge furniture and traditional images by photographer Hendrik Kerstens create a harmonious blend of old and new. These private quarters offer a sanctuary of comfort, aristocracy, and privacy, reflecting the character of the hotel.

Ian Schrager has once again proven his mastery in the hotel industry. The London EDITION is a triumph, a perfect balance of history and modern design. It is a destination that will undoubtedly spark conversation among the city’s elite. With a Martini in hand, diamonds around the neck, and Jimmy Choos on their feet, London’s socialites will be flocking to experience the opulence of the London EDITION.
