This month has been a lucky one for me, as I finally won a dream staycation in London! I’ve been entering The Guardian’s competitions for years, and this time, my luck changed. I won a luxurious night’s stay at the Grosvenor Hotel in London, complete with a pre-theatre meal and premium tickets to see Miss Atomic Bomb. I couldn’t wait to escape to the city and enjoy all the fancy amenities.
Victorian Grandeur Meets Modern Luxury
The Grosvenor Hotel, built by Victorian railway pioneers in 1862, stands majestically atop Victoria station, making it incredibly convenient for travelers. Stepping into the grand entrance hall is like stepping back in time. The high ceilings, stunning chandelier, and beautiful period features create a truly awe-inspiring space. The hotel recently underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment, preserving its original grandeur while incorporating modern luxuries.
A Dream Bathroom & A Luxurious Lounge
Our Executive King Room on the fourth floor was a haven of comfort. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered stunning views, and the king-size bed begged for a good night’s rest. But before I could even sink into the plush bedding, I was mesmerized by the bathroom of my actual dreams. This space was a spacious sanctuary with elegant black and white tile decor and a magnificent roll-top bath – a true highlight of the stay.
Adding to the luxurious experience was the exclusive Executive Lounge. The lounge was a serene haven, perfect for a quiet moment of work or relaxation. The plush seating and stylish decor created a welcoming ambiance, and the attentive staff ensured every need was met.
A Delicious Surprise & An Unfortunate Dinner
The lounge’s Happy Hour was a delightful treat. The complimentary drinks and canapes were a welcome pre-dinner indulgence. The bruschetta was divine, and the cheeseboard and hot snacks provided a tempting variety. It truly felt like a VIP experience.
Unfortunately, our pre-theatre dinner at The Grosvenor Arms restaurant didn’t quite live up to the high standards set by the hotel. The pre-theatre menu was limited, and our starter, Somerset Brie and Caramelized Onion tart, was underwhelming. The pastry was disappointing, and the onion chutney was peculiar.
My Chicken and Chorizo pasta dish with blue cheese sauce was a bit of a let-down. The flavors were unremarkable, and the blue cheese sauce was simply crumbled cheese, which wasn’t to my liking. However, the generous portion was a plus, and I couldn’t finish it all.
A Sweet Redemption & A Delicious Breakfast
The Dark Chocolate Tart with Raspberry Romanoff Cream and Crushed Pistachio redeemed the dinner experience. The rich chocolate tart was an absolute delight, and the raspberry cream and crushed pistachio provided a lovely contrast.
The Grosvenor Arms redeemed itself at breakfast with a delightful buffet featuring cooked Full English, pastries, cereal, cold meats, yoghurts, fruit, and more. The sausage and bacon were both good, and I particularly enjoyed the potato croquettes.
A Luxurious Stay With A Caveat
The Grosvenor Hotel is a truly beautiful and luxurious place to stay. The bedroom, the bathroom, and the Executive Lounge all contributed to a special and unforgettable experience. However, I would recommend avoiding the restaurant and exploring the many other dining options Victoria has to offer.
For a touch of luxury in the heart of London, the Grosvenor Hotel is a fantastic choice. However, be sure to plan your meals accordingly. Enjoy the stunning accommodations, the exceptional service, and the vibrant city that surrounds this grand hotel.
