Our Commitment to Sustainability

We believe in protecting our planet for future generations. That’s why we’ve aligned our environmental goals with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including:

  • Clean water and sanitation: Goal 6
  • Affordable and clean energy: Goal 7
  • Decent work and economic growth: Goal 8
  • Responsible consumption and production: Goal 12
  • Climate action: Goal 13

We’re dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment. We believe that sustainability is everyone’s responsibility.

Taking Action for the Environment

We put our sustainability goals into action through a comprehensive environmental management system based on ISO 14001:2015 requirements and Green Key Criteria. This system helps us continuously improve our environmental performance.

Our commitment to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle is a cornerstone of our operations. We do this by:

  • Reducing waste: Minimizing consumption, choosing bulk purchases to cut down on packaging waste, encouraging suppliers to use less packaging, repurposing old fabrics and linens, and opting for products made from recycled materials.
  • Reusing materials: We use old linens for cleaning and repurpose materials whenever possible.
  • Recycling: We prioritize using products with recycled content like recycled paper and toilet rolls.

Educating and Empowering our Team

We believe in the power of education and training to drive positive change. We provide our employees with the knowledge and skills needed to minimize our environmental footprint through:

  • Environmental education and training: We equip our staff with the knowledge and skills needed to be environmentally conscious.
  • Optimizing equipment usage: We train our team to use all equipment efficiently and effectively.
  • Raising awareness: We place signs and stickers around the hotel to remind everyone to conserve water and energy.

Managing Our Environmental Impact

We actively manage, measure, and minimize the negative impacts of our operations on the environment. This includes focusing on:

  • Energy and water consumption: We carefully monitor our energy and water usage to identify areas for improvement.
  • Carbon footprint and climate change mitigation: We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and taking steps to mitigate climate change.
  • Pollution prevention: We strive to prevent pollution from air pollutants, fertilizers, and pesticides.
  • Safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystems: We are committed to protecting both local and global biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • Conserving natural resources: We practice responsible resource consumption to ensure their availability for future generations.
  • Waste reduction: We are continually working to reduce the amount of waste we produce.

Energy Efficiency: A Key Focus

We are committed to using energy efficiently, and our efforts include:

  • Tracking energy consumption: We meticulously track our daily energy consumption and compare it to industry benchmarks.
  • LED lighting: We have transitioned 95% of our lighting to energy-efficient LED technology.
  • Light sensors and timers: We use light sensors to automatically turn off lights in unoccupied areas and timers to control exterior lights and signs.
  • Solar-powered lighting: We have replaced decorative outdoor lighting with solar-powered alternatives, using electricity only for emergency lights and those necessary for health and safety reasons.
  • Efficient equipment: We turn off all equipment, including kitchen appliances, TVs, and computers, when not in use. We replace older equipment with the latest, most energy-efficient technology.
  • Power management: We turn off the power to empty guestrooms, conference rooms, and banquet rooms that will remain unoccupied for four days or more.
  • Refrigerator maintenance: We regularly clean and defrost our fridges and freezers and inspect seals every six months.
  • Temperature control: Our building management system (BMS) sets and monitors standard cooling and heating temperatures to optimize energy use.

Water Conservation: A Priority

We are committed to conserving water, and our initiatives include:

  • Encouraging eco-friendly transportation: We provide safe bicycle parking, electric car charging stations, public transportation tickets, and a free shuttle bus to employee housing.
  • Water-saving fixtures: We’ve installed aerators and flow restrictors in guestrooms and public bathrooms to reduce water flow.
  • Leak control: We proactively monitor for and fix any water leaks.
  • Treating wastewater: We use 100% treated municipal wastewater for irrigation.
  • Efficient irrigation system: We use a computerized drip irrigation system with underground pipes and connectors to minimize water evaporation and maximize plant health.

Sustainable Practices Throughout the Hotel

We are dedicated to sustainability in all aspects of our operations, including:

  • Linen practices: We provide a linen change card in every guestroom. Guests can choose to keep their linens clean or request new ones.
  • Reducing single-use plastics: We acknowledge the environmental impact of single-use plastics and are working to actively reduce their use, opting for reusable alternatives whenever possible.
  • Waste management: We identify different types of hotel waste, measure quantities, and set targets to minimize our environmental footprint by reducing, recycling, or reusing waste.
  • Hazardous substance management: We are committed to reducing the use of hazardous substances, storing them safely, and ensuring proper usage and disposal practices.
  • Disinfectants: We prioritize less harmful disinfecting substances and use them only when necessary.
  • Eco-friendly landscaping: We use plant-based fertilizers from green waste to nourish our plants and follow national and European Union regulations for pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Supporting local biodiversity: We maximize our green spaces, plant flowers that attract pollinators, and choose native and self-growing plants. We actively work to eradicate invasive species that threaten local wildlife.

Sustainable Procurement: A Key Element

We believe in sustainable procurement, and we select suppliers and products that meet the following criteria:

  • Responsible sourcing: We prioritize suppliers who use responsible sourcing practices.
  • Recyclable materials: We choose products made from recycled materials whenever possible.
  • Sustainable production: We select products made with sustainably produced materials.
  • Fair trade: We support fair trade practices by purchasing fair trade products.
  • Organic: We favor organic products to protect the environment and support sustainable farming methods.
  • FSC and MSC certified: We choose products that meet Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards for sustainable forestry and fisheries.
  • Reduced packaging: We prioritize products with less packaging.
  • Energy efficient: We choose energy-efficient products to reduce our energy consumption.
  • Water saving: We opt for water-saving products and appliances to conserve water resources.
  • Environmentally friendly: We choose products that are environmentally friendly throughout their lifecycle.

Animal Welfare: A Core Value

We are committed to respecting animal welfare through the “Five Freedoms” endorsed by the World Organization for Animal Health:

  • Freedom from thirst, hunger, and malnutrition: We ensure that all animals have access to adequate food and water.
  • Freedom from discomfort: We strive to provide comfortable living conditions for animals.
  • Freedom from pain, injury, and disease: We prioritize animal health and well-being.
  • Freedom to express normal behavior: We encourage animals to engage in natural behaviors.
  • Freedom from fear and distress: We create an environment where animals feel safe and secure.

We are committed to:

  • Not selling wildlife species or articles made from wildlife materials: We do not offer products derived from endangered or protected animals.
  • Not using animals in entertainment: We do not use animals in staged photos or entertainment.
  • Not supporting unacceptable conditions for animals: We oppose exhibiting wildlife species in zoos, aquariums, circuses, or supporting paid animal photography where animals may be subjected to unsuitable conditions.

A Sustainable Future

We are constantly striving to improve our environmental performance and find new ways to reduce our impact on the planet. We believe that by working together, we can create a more sustainable future for all.
