The name Artesian is synonymous with world-class cocktails. This London bar, nestled within the opulent Langham Hotel, has reigned supreme for the past four years, attracting a global clientele. The mastermind behind this legendary establishment is Alex Kratena, who has created a haven for cocktail enthusiasts.
The bar is so popular that it draws more visitors than the hotel rooms themselves. Though Kratena travels extensively, he relies on his talented team, led by the exceptional Simone Caporale. However, the title “No. 2” doesn’t fully capture Caporale’s immense contributions and skill.
A Warm Welcome and Impeccable Service
During my visits, I was fortunate enough to experience Caporale’s exceptional hospitality. His knowledge, efficiency, and wit made for an unforgettable experience. It’s no surprise that he remembers his guests months later, a testament to his genuine warmth and commitment to delivering exceptional service.
The bar’s interior reflects the grandeur of the Langham Hotel, with lavish marble surfaces, sophisticated lighting, and luxurious furniture. While some may find the ambiance a bit pompous, the bar welcomes everyone, regardless of background or dress code. This inclusive approach is a true testament to the bar’s character and adds to its appeal.
A Symphony of Flavors
Artesian’s service is impeccable, whether you’re seated at the bar or served by the attentive staff. However, for the full cocktail experience, try to secure a spot at the bar, especially in the afternoon. You’ll be surrounded by the energy and expertise of the bartenders.
Don’t feel pressured to order from the extensive cocktail menu, though I highly recommend exploring its creative concoctions. Artesian offers a wide range of beverages, including champagne, wine, beer, and classic cocktails, all crafted with meticulous precision.
A Journey Through Unique Cocktails
I sampled several cocktails, and each one was a unique journey of flavors. The Chameleon Crystals with Tanqueray 10, pisco, lime, perilla, chili, and soy was a sweet delight presented in a beautiful box. Opening it felt like unlocking a treasure chest, revealing a bright light within. While the combination of sweet and sour was enjoyable, the soy flavor was subtle, and I felt the drink lacked complexity.
The “Fast Money Comes at a Dangerous Price” cocktail, featuring Johnnie Walker Gold, chamomile, vetiver, sandalwood, and kombucha, was a fascinating blend of earthy and floral notes. The chamomile and sandalwood created an aroma reminiscent of a fragrant garden, making it feel like a secret potion.
However, the most impressive cocktail I tasted was the “Last Wish”. This recipe, combining Bulleit rye, calvados, Armagnac, amber, and essensia, was an explosion of flavor. The complexity of the blend surpassed any cocktail I had experienced before, making it a true masterpiece.
A Culinary Delight
If your cocktail journey sparks an appetite, Artesian’s food is equally impressive. While the prices are on the higher end, the quality is worth every penny. The small bites are a true culinary delight, making for a perfect ending to a wonderful evening.
The bar’s lively ambiance is punctuated by the gentle rhythm of house music. While some may find the music out of place, it doesn’t detract from the quality of the cocktails or the overall experience.
A New Chapter
In a surprising turn of events, both Alex Kratena and Simone Caporale have left Artesian. This news has sent shockwaves through the cocktail world, leaving many wondering about the future of this iconic bar.
Despite the change, Artesian remains a testament to the incredible talent of its former leaders. While the future remains uncertain, one thing is certain: Artesian’s legacy as a world-renowned cocktail destination is secure. It will be fascinating to see what new heights this bar will reach under new leadership.
Where will Kratena and Caporale go next? What exciting projects will they embark on? The cocktail world eagerly awaits their next move.
