The London Edition Hotel, a recent addition to the city’s vibrant scene, offers a unique blend of luxury and contemporary style. It’s a true testament to the vision of hotelier Ian Schrager, known for creating some of the world’s most trendy and fashionable spaces.
A Luxurious Escape in Fitzrovia
Nestled in Fitzrovia, a quiet yet central neighbourhood just north of Oxford Street, the hotel stands out with its grand presence. The mid-century inspired rooms, slick wood-panelled walls, and regal Belle Époque interiors offer a sophisticated escape from the bustling city. The hotel’s bustling lobby bar adds to its magnetic appeal, attracting A-list clientele seeking a stylish and substantive experience.
A Fusion of Old-World Charm and Modern Flair
Schrager’s signature design philosophy is evident in the hotel’s gimmick-free, yet thoughtful approach. The historic lobby, with its stucco, marble, and stained glass, is given a funky edge through warm textures like mustard velvet upholstery, warm green leather, and burnt ochre walls. However, the real showstopper is the Berners Tavern restaurant, occupying a large portion of the ground floor. With its 18-foot-high stucco ceiling, open-plan dining room, and eye-catching art-gallery walls, it’s a true showpiece. Although inspired by old-school London members clubs, the atmosphere is far from stuffy, offering a surprisingly relaxed vibe.
Chic Interiors and Exquisite Amenities
The hotel’s rooms are simple yet elegant, reminiscent of a luxury yacht’s interior. They feature Scandi wishbone chairs, Schrager’s signature floor-to-ceiling white curtains, and gold-framed photographs by Hendrik Kerstens. The soundproof rooms provide a welcome sanctuary from the city’s hustle and bustle. While the all-white bathrooms, though clean and serene, might lack the eclectic charm of the rest of the hotel, they offer a serene contrast. The rainforest showers in most rooms and the free-standing tubs in suites add to the luxurious experience. Our terrace room, with its sun-facing outdoor seating area, offered a fantastic view of Berners Street.
A Culinary Paradise: Berners Tavern and More
The hotel’s culinary highlight is undoubtedly the Michelin-starred Berners Tavern, helmed by renowned chef Jason Atherton. This grand dining room is a popular spot for afternoon tea, attracting fashion icons and A-listers. While I only enjoyed breakfast during my stay, my previous dinner experience left me thoroughly impressed. The lobby cocktail bar and the exclusive Punch Room, with its plush chairs, low lighting, and signature cocktails, offer additional culinary delights.
Impeccable Service and a Stylish Vibe
The London Edition Hotel is a true testament to harmonious design. The hotel effortlessly blends historic charm with contemporary flair, creating a space that is both elegant and welcoming. However, the true gem is the exemplary service. From the warm and professional staff in the restaurants and reception to the cheerful bell boy, everyone goes above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay. The award-show after-party vibe of the lobby bar, the sleek wood-panelled rooms, and the iconic Berners Tavern all contribute to the hotel’s hip and stylish atmosphere. The London Edition is a cut above the rest, offering an unparalleled luxury experience in the heart of London.
