A Festive Stroll Along the Thames

Just a short walk from the London Eye, on the banks of the River Thames, lies the Southbank Centre Christmas Market. Although it’s one of the smaller markets, its charm lies in its focus on food and drinks. While you might not find an abundance of gifts or souvenirs, the market offers a delightful opportunity to sample seasonal treats and warm up with a comforting cup of mulled wine. But the real highlight is the spectacular view across the river to Parliament and Big Ben. If you’re planning to ride the London Eye, consider a quick detour to this market for a little shopping or a festive drink.

This market pairs beautifully with a visit to the London Eye, Westminster Bridge and Big Ben, or even a trip to Sea Life.

Tower Bridge Views and Festive Chaos

Located on the south bank of the River Thames, between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, Christmas By the River at London Bridge City is a bustling pop-up market brimming with the usual Christmas ornaments, sweet treats, and handmade gifts. The views of Tower Bridge are certainly spectacular, but the market itself can be a bit overwhelming. During our visits, we found it incredibly crowded, making it a bit of a challenge to navigate the long strip of pop-up stalls.

This market could be combined with a visit to Tower Bridge, the Shard, or a trip to the nearby Borough Market.

A Feast for the Senses at Borough Market

Open year-round, Borough Market is a culinary haven, a must-visit even outside the Christmas season. With its abundance of small restaurants and food shops, you can feast on everything from freshly shucked oysters to artisan breads, Taiwanese and Indian street food, and exquisite French pastries. And during December, the market transforms into a festive wonderland, adorned with Christmas decorations and offering a treasure trove of unique gifts, from gourmet olive oils and condiments to fine wines and spirits, and delicacies from around the world.

A Winter Wonderland Adventure

Winter Wonderland is a massive Christmas amusement park and market that’s sure to spark strong emotions. While some adore its festive spectacle, others find it overcrowded and expensive. Our midday visit on a weekday in early December proved to be a pleasant experience, with manageable crowds and prices comparable to other markets. However, evenings can be quite chaotic, so a midday visit is recommended for a more peaceful experience.

Winter Wonderland offers a diverse range of attractions, from an ice rink and a small Christmas market to a Bavarian village, an ice bar, rides, shows, and a Magical Ice Kingdom. Santa Clause even makes a daily appearance at Santaland!

If your primary interest is the market, consider visiting one of the other markets instead, as Winter Wonderland does require an entrance fee.
