A Global Hotel Empire: The Rise of Leonardo Hotels

Welcome to the world of Leonardo Hotels, a flourishing hotel chain with a global reach! This article dives deep into the history and success of Leonardo Hotels, exploring its journey from humble beginnings to a major player in the international hospitality landscape.

From a Single Hotel to a Global Network

Leonardo Hotels, headquartered in Berlin, has grown tremendously since its inception in 2006. This ambitious hotel group boasts over 160 properties (as of August 2022), a testament to its dynamic expansion strategy. The brainchild of David Fattal, a seasoned hotelier from Haifa, Israel, Leonardo Hotels started its journey in Nuremberg, Germany. The distinct Leonardo Hotels brand name and logo were officially registered in Germany in 2007 and internationally a year later.

The establishment of Leonardo Hotels marked a significant shift for David Fattal’s business ventures. Driven by a vision to expand beyond his existing tourism enterprise, Fattal Holdings Ltd., he embarked on a global expansion spree, strategically acquiring hotels across Europe. This ambitious growth trajectory was fueled by a combination of the company’s own resources and investment funds.

Leonardo Hotels’ expansion strategy was marked by a series of acquisitions and new constructions, initially focusing on Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland. The company’s reach then extended further, incorporating existing hotels in Israel around 2009 and then venturing into new markets like Hungary (2011), Austria (2012), and the UK (2015). The expansion continued unabated, adding hotels in Spain (2015), Italy (2015), the Netherlands (2016), Czech Republic (2016), Ireland (2017), Poland (2017), and Romania (2021). This impressive growth trajectory was further fueled by the announcement of a dedicated investment fund in April 2022, solidifying Leonardo Hotels’ commitment to further expansion across Europe.

A Strong Foundation: Structure and Management

Leonardo Hotels is an integral part of the Fattal Holdings (1998) Ltd. umbrella, with its European operations managed by a wholly-owned subsidiary, Sunflower Management GmbH & Co. KG. Whether owned directly by Fattal Holdings or its subsidiaries, or leased, each Leonardo Hotel contributes to the company’s impressive portfolio. This expansive network employs over 2,700 individuals in Central Europe alone, showcasing the impressive scale of the company.

Yoram Biton, a veteran of the hospitality industry, leads the Central European branch of Leonardo Hotels as Managing Director. He oversees the diverse range of brands under the Leonardo Hotels banner, which include Leonardo Hotels, Leonardo Boutique Hotels, Leonardo Royal Hotels, and NYX Hotels by Leonardo Hotels. This multifaceted approach caters to a wide range of traveler needs and preferences.

A Legacy of Acquisitions: Building a Global Footprint

The Leonardo Hotels brand boasts a portfolio of over 160 hotels, with the largest concentration located in Germany. A series of strategic acquisitions further solidified Leonardo Hotels’ position in the international market. This includes the acquisition of the Jurys Inn chain in the UK and Ireland (51 hotels), the Apollo Hotels in the Netherlands and Belgium (13 hotels), and six hotels on the Balearic Islands. These acquisitions have been pivotal in driving Leonardo Hotels’ global growth and establishing its presence in key travel destinations.

Leonardo Hotels’ journey is a testament to the power of vision, ambition, and strategic expansion. From its humble beginnings in Germany, the company has evolved into a leading global hotel group, with a strong foundation for continued growth and success in the future.
