Welcome to a review of the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London! This majestic hotel, housed in a stunning Victorian building, is more than just a place to rest your head. It’s a journey back in time, complete with modern amenities and exceptional service. Let’s dive into the details and see why this hotel deserves all the praise it receives.
Location, Location, Location
The St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel boasts an incredibly convenient location. Right next door are St. Pancras International Station and King’s Cross Station, making it a breeze to explore the city. Plus, you’ll find a variety of restaurants and bars right within the hotel. For those needing a bit of relaxation, there’s a spa and gym in the hotel basement. And if you’re planning an event, there are numerous unique function suites to choose from.
Room Review: A Tale of Two Rooms
My first room was a standard twin in the Barlow Wing. While spotlessly clean and well-designed, it felt a bit too basic for such a grand hotel. The shower over the bath and dark window facing the station roof weren’t ideal. But don’t despair! If you find yourself in the Barlow Wing, request a higher level, or even better, an odd-numbered room with a street-facing view.
However, I was later upgraded to a king-bed room on the 7th floor, and this room was a completely different story! It had more light and a higher ceiling and even though it still faced the station, the window was positioned higher, giving it a more airy feel. This room had a distinct vintage charm that truly evoked the spirit of a railway station waiting room.
Luxury and Comfort: A Perfect Blend
Both rooms were incredibly comfortable and exceptionally clean. The beds were super-comfortable, and there were thoughtful touches like complimentary water bottles and refillable water stations in the hallways. Every room also came equipped with a mini-bar, bathrobes, plenty of towels and my personal favorite, an iron and ironing board. The standard twin was a bit basic, but the king-bed room was a delight, featuring marble walls and floors, upgraded bathroom fixtures, a walk-in shower, and a heated bathroom mirror.
Breakfast Delights: A Choice for Every Taste
The hotel offers two excellent breakfast options: the Booking Office and the Chambers Club. The Booking Office is a stunning space with vaulted ceilings and a rich history, and its extensive buffet boasts everything from fresh fruits and pastries to a variety of hot options, including a made-to-order egg station.
On the other hand, the Chambers Club offers a more intimate and exclusive setting. It’s beautifully presented, but the breakfast selection is somewhat limited, with a smaller range of items compared to the Booking Office. However, if you do happen to be staying in the Chambers Club, you can always head next door to the Booking Office and enjoy a more varied spread.
Dining and Lounging in Style
The hotel offers a range of dining options, but I particularly enjoyed the Chambers Lounge. While the breakfast selection was a bit disappointing, I found the dinner service to be exceptional. The ability to order from other restaurants’ menus while dining in the lounge was a delightful perk.
And for solo travelers like myself, the Chambers Lounge provided a peaceful and comfortable space to work during the day and enjoy a cocktail and dinner in the evening.
The Grand Legacy of the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel
This hotel holds a truly unique place in London’s history. Built in 1973 as the Midland Grand Hotel, it was designed by the renowned architect George Gilbert Scott and closed its doors in 1935. After decades of being used as railway offices, it underwent a massive restoration and reopened as a hotel in 2011.
Today, this grand gothic building is an iconic landmark, known for its majestic staircase that was famously featured in the Spice Girls’ music video for “Wannabe.”
