The anticipation was palpable. We’d carefully planned our Girls Trip 2022 for mid-November, perfectly timed to witness London’s dazzling Christmas light displays. I’ve travelled the globe, but nothing compares to the way London transforms for the holidays. Imagine streets aglow with twinkling lights, entire buildings adorned with festive decorations, and those iconic department stores, like Harrod’s, decked out in their holiday best. It’s truly the most magical time to explore this beloved city.
A Shopping Spree Through London’s Finest
Our first full day in London was dedicated to the ultimate shopping experience. We began at the legendary Harrod’s, a retail wonderland where you can find anything from designer labels to gourmet treats and affordable souvenirs. I couldn’t resist adding a Paddington Bear to my collection, requiring an extra suitcase for the journey home!
After the grandeur of Harrod’s, we hopped into a cab from the nearby taxi stand. Many of the iconic stores are within walking distance of each other, especially after reaching Oxford Street. Thankfully, these grand department stores offer cafes and relaxing spaces – shopping can be tiring! We explored these renowned destinations:
- Fenwick’s on Bond Street: A treasure trove of furniture, clothing, and everything in between.
- Liberty of London on Regent Street: A dream come true for sewing enthusiasts, bursting with exquisite fabrics.
- Carnaby Street: A vibrant street teeming with specialty shops and cozy cafes.
- Fortnum & Mason: Famous for their exquisite selection of tea, biscuits, and preserves – perfect for gifts.
Royal Shopping & Market Delights
One of our tour guides shared a secret: look for signs above shop entrances indicating that they supply goods to the Royal Family. It’s a significant honor for these bespoke stores, often specializing in tailoring, hats, hunting clothes, and other niche products. For those not on a royal budget, Marks & Spencer and Primark are excellent options, offering affordable fashion for the average Londoner. We found fantastic deals on gifts and clothes for ourselves, and Patti even snagged a new coat!
London’s markets are a must-visit for shoppers and foodies alike. We indulged in two of the city’s most popular markets:
- Spitalfields Market: A vibrant mix of vintage clothing, vinyl records, and unique gifts. Don’t miss The Flat Iron for a delicious lunch or explore the diverse food stalls for a tasty bite.
- Covent Garden Market: This historic market dates back to 1845 and is a haven for delicious food and unique finds. During the holidays, it’s especially charming. We enjoyed traditional fish and chips with mushy peas at the Punch and Judy pub, but the real showstopper was the sticky pudding – a heavenly treat.
A Magical Christmas Lights Bus Tour
After a whirlwind day of shopping, we rested our tired legs and savored the treats on Brigit’s Bus Tea Tour. It was the first Christmas lights bus of the season, and we were thrilled to be aboard. As we toured the city, sipping on tea, hot chocolate, and champagne, we nibbled on delicious snacks, wore festive paper crowns, and sang holiday carols. It was the perfect end to a truly perfect day in London.
I wholeheartedly recommend visiting London in mid-November. The crowds are smaller, the decorations are breathtaking, and the shopping is fantastic – a perfect trifecta for a memorable girls trip!
