Imagine a hotel that seamlessly blends luxury with a vibrant, city-center location. The Londoner Hotel, billed as the world’s first super-boutique hotel, opened its doors in September 2021. I’ve been eager to experience this unique property since it first appeared on my radar, and I was thrilled to finally spend a weekend there in March 2022. While a couple of minor issues arose, they didn’t detract from the overall experience, and I’m already planning my return visit.
A World Within a City
The Londoner boasts an enviable location on the southwest corner of Leicester Square. It’s mere minutes away from the Piccadilly and Leicester Square Tube stations, making it incredibly convenient for exploring the city. You’re steps away from Chinatown, Soho, and Covent Garden, and a short walk brings you to Regent Street for high-end shopping and Oxford Street for more mainstream retail therapy. Movie buffs will be delighted by the multiple cinemas right on the doorstep, including an Odeon located within the hotel itself. And if you’re looking for a night out, there’s an endless array of bars and restaurants within walking distance.
Stylish Retreats
The Londoner offers a range of stylish accommodations, from King and Deluxe King rooms to Junior and Corner Suites. For those seeking something truly special, there are also Capital, Signature, and Tower Penthouse Suites (the latter being a two-story statement apartment with breathtaking London views). I initially checked into a Deluxe King room, which was beautifully designed with meticulous attention to detail. The stunning views, the elegant combination of neutral colors and materials, and the subtle wood-panelling punctuated with pops of color created a truly inviting space. The open-plan bathroom impressed with its bold tiling, colorful sink, separate walk-in shower and WC, and a Japanese electronic Toto toilet. Every detail was meticulously considered, from the sparkling clean surfaces to the complimentary minibar, enormous LCD TV, digital and Bluetooth-enabled Roberts radio, and a thoughtful selection of amenities like recyclable mineral water, a hairdryer, electric steamer, robes, slippers, and binoculars. Miller Harris Tea Tonique toiletries added a touch of luxury.
A Culinary Journey
The Londoner offers a variety of dining experiences, making it possible to enjoy delicious meals and drinks without ever stepping outside. Breakfast at Whitcomb’s is a true delight. The extensive buffet includes fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt, juices, pastries, and a full hot selection, including an egg/omelette station. You can also order teas, coffees, and a la carte options from your server. The restaurant, with its French/Mediterranean inspiration, also serves lunch and dinner. For pre-dinner drinks, head to Joshua’s Tavern, a traditional pub-like setting with an incredible selection of gins. And after dinner, reserve an outside table at the Japanese-inspired 8 at The Londoner. This chic venue offers stunning views of the London skyline and a delectable menu of food and drinks. The Shima Garden, open only at night, features a DJ and heaters for chilly evenings.
For guests seeking a more exclusive atmosphere, there’s The Residence, an exclusive space located above The Stage. This secluded area features three bar areas, a restaurant with a casual menu, and complimentary teas, coffees, soft drinks, and Italian antipasti. There’s also a selection of board games, an iMac, and newspapers and magazines to keep you entertained. A secret whisky bar adds an intriguing touch. Champagne breakfasts and afternoon teas are served in The Stage area, while Refuel, located at The Retreat, offers healthy food and drinks.
A Wellness Retreat
The Londoner’s The Retreat on level -4 is a wellness oasis. It’s home to a large gym and fitness room, a spa with treatment rooms, Refuel (a superfood and drinks clinic), and a stylish beauty “street.” This “street” features men’s grooming by Joe Vipond, Hair & Beauty by Hiro Miyoshi, and nails by AMA. The spa area itself features a decent-sized swimming pool and hydropool, surrounded by private cabanas. I was particularly impressed by Stefani, the Spa and Wellness Manager, who was so welcoming and involved. I’ll be sharing a more detailed spa review on my blog, This Man’s Journal, soon.
A Londoner’s Verdict
Overall, my weekend at The Londoner was fantastic. The hotel’s design, service, and unique amenities made for a memorable stay. While I encountered a few minor hiccups with the first room and afternoon tea, they were ultimately insignificant compared to the overall experience. The Londoner is an exceptional hotel, and I’ll definitely be returning soon. It’s a unique destination that truly embodies the spirit of London, offering a blend of luxury, convenience, and a sense of place.
