A London Stay at the Leonardo Royal Hotel: A Blend of Luxury and Quirks

This article shares my personal experience staying at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London City. I’ll take you through the highlights, the not-so-great bits, and the overall impression it left on me. So, grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let’s embark on this London adventure together!

Arriving at Leonardo Royal: A Spacious Welcome

My journey began with a smooth check-in at 2 pm, an hour before the standard time thanks to my booking. The lobby was a sight to behold – spacious, elegant, and inviting, with plush seating arrangements perfect for unwinding after a long journey. I was impressed by the warm greeting from the staff and the efficient check-in process.

Room 1207: A Suite with Breathtaking Views

My home for the next few days was Room 1207, a suite on the 12th floor. Stepping into the suite, I was greeted by a functional kitchenette, leading to a living room with floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of iconic landmarks like the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and the Shard. The living room was comfortably furnished with two sofas, a coffee table, a TV, and London-inspired artwork.

The bedroom, adjacent to the living room, boasted a king-sized bed facing the same mesmerizing views. It was well-equipped with wardrobes, a minibar, a safe, and multiple power outlets with USB charging ports – a thoughtful touch for the modern traveler.

A Suite Full of Amenities

The suite was generously equipped with a flat-screen TV, writing desk, iron and ironing board, complimentary toiletries, a bathtub or shower, hairdryer, bathrobe, slippers, and a generous 10% discount on lunch and dinner. Additional perks included a free newspaper, unlimited Wifi, complimentary mineral water, a coffee & tea maker, and a telephone.

A delightful handwritten welcome note and a sweet treat added a personal touch to my stay. It was a thoughtful gesture that made me feel welcome and appreciated.

A Mixed Bag: Bathroom & Breakfast

The spacious bathroom, adorned with white marble tiles and chic black borders, initially impressed me with its elegant design and floor heating. However, upon closer inspection, I noticed signs of wear and tear, including cracked tiles, poorly filled joints, and damaged enamel in the shower area. This detracted from the suite’s luxurious feel, and unfortunately, it didn’t meet the high standards of the rest of the suite.

Breakfast at the Hotel’s restaurant, Leo’s, offered an extensive buffet with a variety of choices. From traditional English breakfast items to continental options like pancakes, omelets, fresh fruits, and an array of bread, there was something for everyone. However, my first breakfast experience was marred by a disengaged staff member, though this was later compensated by the attentive service of other colleagues.

A Tale of Two Service Experiences: Attentive and Unengaged

The staff at the Leonardo Royal was mostly attentive and helpful. However, there were moments where their engagement could have been more consistent, particularly in the lobby area. It felt like a stark contrast to the service expected in a 5-star establishment, as I’ve experienced at the Shangri-La.

Leo’s: A Thursday Evening to Remember

My dining experience at Leo’s on a Thursday evening was a highlight of my stay. Kostas, the friendly staff member, not only found me a great table but also engaged in lively conversations, switching between English and German. The fish and chips I ordered were delicious, and the service was exceptional. Kostas truly made the evening memorable.

Departing with a Sweet Gesture

On my checkout day, I received a lovely parting gift – a bottle of red wine. While I couldn’t enjoy it due to my travel plans, this gesture was a heartwarming end to my stay, leaving a lasting positive impression.

A Stay Full of Contradictions

My stay at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London City was a mix of stunning views, well-appointed suites, and mostly commendable service, but also included some areas for improvement. The bathroom maintenance and consistency in staff engagement were the main points that could be improved upon.

Despite these minor flaws, the personal touches, like the handwritten note and the parting gift, added a unique charm to my experience. They left a significant impact, making me overlook the minor issues. Overall, my stay was positive, and I would consider returning to Leonardo Royal Hotel in the future, hoping they continue to uphold and improve their standards of hospitality.
