Imagine waking up to breathtaking views of iconic London landmarks like the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. That was my reality during my stay at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London City. I’ve always appreciated a hotel that goes the extra mile, and this one delivered a blend of luxury and personality.
Arriving in Style: A Warm Welcome
My journey began at 2 pm, an hour before the usual check-in time. I had booked the early check-in and late check-out option, and I was welcomed with open arms at the reception. The lobby’s spacious design, with comfortable seating options, immediately made me feel at home. The check-in process was a breeze, and the staff efficiently provided me with all the necessary information and my key card.
My Suite Sanctuary: Stunning Views and Modern Comfort
Stepping into Room 1207, a suite on the 12th floor, felt like entering a private oasis. The suite’s entryway led to a functional kitchenette, which opened into a living room adorned with floor-to-ceiling windows. The view from these windows was simply breathtaking, showcasing the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and the Shard in all their glory. The living room was invitingly furnished with two sofas, a coffee table, a TV, London-inspired artwork, and a grand chandelier.
The bedroom, adjacent to the living room, was equally luxurious. A large king-sized bed (2m x 2m) dominated the space, offering stunning views from its prime position. The room was also equipped with two wardrobes, a minibar, a safe, and multiple power outlets with USB charging ports – a thoughtful touch for the modern traveler.
Luxury Amenities for a Relaxed Stay
The suite was overflowing with amenities that catered to every need, from the basics like a flat-screen TV and writing desk, to luxurious additions like an iron and ironing board, complimentary toiletries, a choice of a bathtub or shower, a hairdryer, a bathrobe, slippers, and a generous 10% discount on lunch and dinner. Adding to the luxury were a free newspaper, unlimited Wifi, complimentary mineral water, a coffee and tea maker, and a telephone.
The sweet surprise of a handwritten welcome note and a treat was the perfect touch. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made me feel truly valued as a guest. How did they know I loved cake?
A Touch of Perfection with Room for Improvement
The spacious bathroom, with its white marble tiles and chic black border, initially impressed me with its timeless design and floor heating. However, on closer inspection, I noticed some signs of wear and tear. Cracked tiles, poorly filled joints, and damaged enamel in the shower area detracted from the otherwise luxurious feel. While this was a minor drawback, it did fall short of the suite’s high standards.
Breakfast Options & Staff Encounters: A Mixed Bag
Breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant, Leo’s, was a feast for the senses. The buffet offered a wide range of options, from traditional English breakfast items to continental choices like pancakes, omelets, fresh fruits, and a variety of bread. However, my first experience at breakfast was slightly marred by a staff member who seemed disengaged. Thankfully, the attentive service of other colleagues made up for it.
The staff at the hotel, for the most part, were attentive and helpful. However, there were moments when the level of engagement could have been more consistent, particularly in the lobby area. This discrepancy in attentiveness highlighted the difference between the service expected in a 5-star establishment like the Shangri-La and a 4-star hotel like Leonardo Royal. It’s noticeable when staff are more engaged in talking to each other while ignoring guests.
Dining at Leo’s: An Evening to Remember
My dining experience at Leo’s on a Thursday evening was a highlight of my stay. Kostas, the friendly staff member, not only found me a fantastic table but also engaged in lively conversations, seamlessly switching between English and German. The fish and chips I ordered were exceptional, as was the service. Kostas deserves special recognition for making the evening truly memorable.
A Farewell Gift: A Sweet Ending
On the day of my checkout, I received a lovely parting gift – a bottle of red wine. While I couldn’t indulge in it due to my travel constraints, this gesture was a heartwarming end to my stay, leaving a lasting positive impression despite some minor issues.
A Memorable Stay with Room for Growth
The Leonardo Royal Hotel London City’s stunning views, well-appointed suites, and mostly commendable service provided a memorable stay. While there were areas where improvements could be made, particularly in the upkeep of the bathrooms and consistency in staff engagement, the overall experience was positive. The personal touches, like the handwritten note and the parting gift, added a unique charm to my stay. These small gestures often leave the most significant impact, making one overlook minor flaws. As I reflect on my stay, I feel a sense of satisfaction and will consider returning to Leonardo Royal Hotel in the future, hoping that they will continue to uphold and improve their standards of hospitality. See you soon, Leonardo 😉
