The Langham, London, a grand hotel steeped in history, has a special place in my heart. I’ve been fortunate enough to stay there a few times, each experience leaving me with lasting impressions. My latest visit, in January 2017, was particularly memorable for its exceptional service and the sheer grandeur of the hotel.
A Grand History and an Unbeatable Location
The Langham was established in 1865 by HRH The Prince of Wales as Europe’s first “Grand Hotel.” This iconic landmark celebrates its rich history, while maintaining a modern edge. Its location is simply unbeatable, just a short stroll from Oxford Circus, placing it within easy reach of London’s bustling attractions and iconic sights.
A Room Fit for Royalty – And a Touch of Unexpected
This time, we were lucky enough to snag a Junior Suite thanks to a special offer for Langham 1865 loyalty program members. (It’s completely free to join, by the way!) The suite was a luxurious haven, boasting a spacious living room, a separate bedroom, and a well-stocked mini-bar. We were also treated to a complimentary bottle of wine as a welcome amenity.
However, our excitement turned to disappointment when we discovered the spa and pool would be closed during our stay. We were promptly offered an upgrade to a one-bedroom suite (worth £950 per night!) and even complimentary access to the YMCA swimming pool! While this generous offer was certainly unexpected, it was a bit jarring considering the Langham’s renowned luxury.
Note: The spa and pool are now open!
Unparalleled Service at the Club Lounge
From the moment we arrived, the staff at the Club Lounge made us feel right at home. Their warm welcome and attentive service set the tone for a truly exceptional stay.
The Club Lounge was a haven of comfort and elegance, where we were treated to complimentary drinks, including champagne, throughout our stay. The staff were incredibly helpful with local recommendations and were always eager to assist with any request.
Exquisite Accommodation and Breathtaking Views
Even the Superior rooms at The Langham are beautifully appointed, featuring Nespresso machines, media hubs, bathrobes, and the legendary Langham Blissful Bed. Our Junior Suite was even more impressive, with a spacious layout and an array of luxurious amenities.
The bathroom was a sanctuary in itself, with a free-standing bath, separate shower and toilet, twin sinks, and plush bathrobes. The Chuan Spa toiletries added a touch of indulgence, complete with full-size tubes of body scrub.
A Culinary Journey of Delight
The Club Lounge was a culinary highlight, offering an array of delectable treats throughout the day. We indulged in a delightful afternoon tea, featuring an assortment of exquisite pastries, sandwiches, and scones. The cakes were miniature works of art, crafted by the renowned celebrity chef Cherish Finden (who you might recognize from Great British Bake Off!).
Evenings in the lounge were equally impressive, with a selection of canapés, champagne, wines, and cocktails. The martinis were especially noteworthy, perfectly crafted to my specifications.
A Breakfast fit for a King
Breakfast at The Langham was a true indulgence. We enjoyed a lavish buffet, featuring everything from fresh fruit and pastries to smoked salmon and cheeses. We also had the option of ordering cooked-to-order dishes, including Eggs Royale, which was perfectly prepared.
A Spa for Body and Soul
The Langham’s Chuan Body + Soul spa offers a comprehensive range of treatments, combining traditional Chinese medicine with modern techniques. The spa boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including treatment rooms, a gym, wet rooms, steam and sauna facilities, and a 16-meter swimming pool.
Culinary Delights at Every Turn
The Langham is home to a variety of restaurants and bars, catering to every taste. The Palm Court is a legendary destination for afternoon tea, while Roux at the Landau offers fine dining experiences curated by the renowned Michel Roux Jr and Albert Roux OBE.
Artesian is a must-visit for cocktail enthusiasts, having been named the best bar in the world for four consecutive years. The innovative cocktail creations are a testament to the bar’s creativity and dedication to excellence.
Conclusion
The Langham, London, is more than just a hotel; it’s an experience. From its grand history and prime location to its luxurious accommodations and exceptional service, The Langham offers a truly unforgettable stay. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a business retreat, or simply a taste of luxury, The Langham will exceed your expectations.
