Imagine: Stepping into the heart of London’s iconic British Museum, a space filled with history and wonder. Now picture yourself enjoying a delicious meal in a restaurant that seamlessly blends modern design with the museum’s rich heritage. This is the vision brought to life by Softroom, a renowned architectural and design studio, who transformed the Great Court Restaurant, located beneath the magnificent glazed roof designed by the legendary Norman Foster.
A Collaboration of Design and History
The Benugo restaurant group, responsible for catering at the museum since 2012, sought to enhance the dining experience at this unique location. They tapped Softroom’s expertise to revitalize the space, making it more inviting and accessible for visitors. The restaurant, situated behind the iconic Reading Room, wraps around a portion of the curved wall, creating a more open and welcoming atmosphere.
Softroom’s approach was inspired by the historic elegance of the Reading Room, contrasting it with the minimalist aesthetic of the Great Court. The architects aimed to create a space that would seamlessly blend these two distinct styles, creating a unique dining experience for visitors.
A Space for Every Diner
The brief called for a multifaceted dining experience, with various spaces offering different levels of privacy and views. The architects responded by meticulously dividing the floor plan into distinct zones.
A new entrance, strategically aligned with the center of the restaurant, accentuates the symmetry of the Great Court. It leads to a charming charcuterie counter, a perfect starting point for the dining journey. Here, visitors can choose from a variety of delicious offerings while enjoying the lively atmosphere.
For those who prefer a more social setting, there’s a communal area with tall tables, offering a front-row seat to the culinary theatre unfolding in the open kitchen. On the other side, a more intimate space with high-backed banquet seating provides a cozy retreat for those seeking a quieter dining experience.
The restaurant’s design allows diners to enjoy views of the Reading Room through large windows, while two private dining areas at either end provide the perfect setting for larger gatherings.
A Symphony of Materials and Design
Softroom incorporated materials that subtly reference both the Reading Room and the Great Court, creating a harmonious blend of historical charm and modern elegance.
The restaurant’s palette is enriched by the use of wooden furniture and teal-colored upholstery, adding warmth and vibrancy to the space. The flooring, a captivating mosaic of limestone, silver glazed tiling, and marble, radiates outward from the circular Reading Room, echoing the museum’s architectural grandeur.
The result is a restaurant that is both sophisticated and welcoming, a space that celebrates the British Museum’s history while embracing modern dining trends.
Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a unique dining experience in the heart of London, the Great Court Restaurant offers something for everyone.
