Step into a world of elegance and history at Grosvenor House, a grand hotel that has stood proudly on Park Lane since 1929. This iconic landmark boasts a fascinating past, with original Lutyens wrought iron gates and the impressive Great Room – once an ice-skating rink – welcoming guests for over 90 years. The hotel’s quintessentially British style and elegance have attracted royalty, international dignitaries, and celebrities from the world of film, music, and sports for decades. It’s no wonder that Grosvenor House holds a special place in many hearts, including my own, as my godfather was once a manager there.
A Delightful Afternoon Tea
Recently, I had the pleasure of celebrating a dear friend’s birthday with a delightful afternoon tea at Grosvenor House. With the hotel’s new pastry chef, Anna, crafting the menu, we were eager to experience her refreshed take on the classic tradition. As National Afternoon Tea Week approached, I couldn’t think of a more perfect spot to while away a refined afternoon with a good friend.
We arrived in style – my friend on her bike and myself on the bus, embracing eco-friendly travel! Though the main entrance is on Park Street, we chose to enter off Park Lane, marveling at the grand and sweeping entrance.
A Perfect Afternoon
We settled into the bay windows overlooking Hyde Park, bathed in the late afternoon sun. The tranquil scene and the delicious aroma of tea and pastries quickly transported us to a world of relaxation and indulgence. We were greeted with warm smiles and impeccable service by the staff, especially Lorenzo, who took such great care of us.
Anna’s Afternoon Tea is a symphony of flavors and textures. We savored a selection of exquisite teas, including Assam and Earl Grey, alongside delicate sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and an array of delectable cakes and puddings. The experience was topped off with a delightful goodie bag to take home, a sweet reminder of our afternoon.
We lost track of time, engrossed in conversation, the choice of teas, and the tempting array of cakes. After two and a half hours, we left feeling relaxed, happy, and thoroughly spoiled. If you’re seeking a quintessential English afternoon tea in a central London location, Grosvenor House is a perfect choice. I highly recommend it!
