Mrs Simpson’s Restaurant is a charming establishment nestled in the quaint village of Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, South Africa. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a tribute to a captivating figure in British history: Wallis Simpson.
The name itself is a story, a nod to the American socialite who captured the heart of King Edward VIII, causing a royal scandal that shook the world. Edward famously abdicated his throne to marry her, and they became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, a title that echoes through the walls of Mrs Simpson’s.
The restaurant’s décor beautifully reflects this royal connection. Vintage shoes, handbags, and gloves, reminiscent of Wallis Simpson’s exquisite taste, adorn the walls, creating a unique and nostalgic atmosphere. These treasures, many generously donated by patrons and friends, add a touch of history and charm to the dining experience.
Even a “Mrs Simpson” fishing fly finds its place amidst the décor. The fly, known for its allure to trout, mirrors the captivating nature of its namesake. It’s a playful reminder of the story behind the restaurant’s name and the allure of the place itself.
Mrs Simpson’s is renowned for its exceptional food and warm hospitality. It’s consistently ranked among the top country restaurants in South Africa, drawing in visitors from far and wide. This is a place where you can indulge in a delectable meal while being surrounded by the charm of a royal past.
A Delicious Journey Through Flavor
Our visit to Mrs Simpson’s was a culinary highlight. We had spent days exploring the Kruger National Park, living off camp food, and were eager to experience the restaurant’s renowned offerings. We entered with a touch of anxiety, navigating a world still adjusting to the pandemic, but were immediately reassured by the staff’s meticulous adherence to health protocols. The tables were spaced apart, creating a safe and comfortable dining environment.
Our waiter, Al, with a name as vibrant as his pink loafers and face mask, guided us through the menu. Paul, a lover of all things savory, opted for the chicken livers, which he declared “outstanding.” I, on the other hand, was lured by the Thai phyllo-wrapped prawns – a delightful fusion of flavors that left me thoroughly satisfied.
For our main course, I remained true to my Asian cravings with the Thai chicken curry, while Paul opted for the hake and chips – a classic combination that never fails to impress. Both dishes were beautifully prepared, showcasing the chef’s culinary expertise.
To conclude our feast, we indulged in a delightful selection of desserts, choosing the cheesecake and peanut butter ice cream from a tempting array presented on a wooden board. Each bite was a sweet symphony of flavors, ending our meal on a high note.
A Gem Worth Discovering
Mrs Simpson’s doesn’t aspire to the grandeur of Michelin-starred restaurants, but it’s certainly a gem in its own right. Their eclectic menu, featuring dishes like Moroccan prawns, rainbow trout, and Cape Malay bobotie, is a testament to their culinary versatility. Every dish is prepared with care and presented with style, making each visit a memorable experience.
What truly sets Mrs Simpson’s apart, however, is the warmth and genuine hospitality that permeates the entire atmosphere. It’s a place where you feel welcome, valued, and truly indulged. This is a restaurant that truly earns its reputation as a “must visit” establishment.
As a former editor of Exit Magazine, I’m a big fan of awarding “chandeliers” for excellence. And without a doubt, Mrs Simpson’s deserves five chandeliers for their hearty welcome, delicious food, meticulous presentation, and fascinating ambience.
If you’re looking for a unique culinary experience in a charming setting, make sure to add Mrs Simpson’s to your list. You won’t be disappointed.
