A Creative Collaboration

Chasing The Light Studio and Landmark Space have joined forces once again, bringing together a talented group of artists to inject a dose of creativity, inspiration, and harmony into the workspace.

Following the success of their lush woodland theme at Landmark Victoria Orchard Place, curators Maya Sanbar and Vestalia Chilton turned their attention to “The Lighthouse,” Landmark’s flagship King’s Cross building, known for its unique nautical rooftop turret.

With a broad vision, Maya and Vestalia (also the founding director of Kensington and Chelsea Art Week) assigned each floor a distinct theme that blends seamlessly with the building’s architecture, history, surrounding environment, and the people who work there.

Art Inspired by the Building’s History and Surroundings

The Victorian building, possibly once an oyster bar, stands on an island between Gray’s Inn Road, Pentonville Road, York Way, and Euston Road, just across from King’s Cross mainline station. This unique location, coupled with the lighthouse itself, inspired the artistic sea elements woven throughout the artwork.

“The Lighthouse is a unique building on an island in Kings Cross,” added Maya. “It was very exciting to work on this site and bring together a community of local artists to transform and inspire visitors.”

Introducing the Artists and Their Masterpieces

On the ground floor, a screen displays King’s Cross departure times, setting the stage for Roman Lokati’s exquisite sculpture. The Spanish artist’s metal cut-outs, representing travelers and movement, allow light to pass through, creating a captivating visual experience.

Barny Durham’s mural of a lighthouse, inspired by the building’s tower, adds to the ground floor’s artistic tapestry. As you move to the coworking space, Debbie Carne of Alijoedesigns welcomes you with her ceramic wall installation. This vibrant piece features thought-provoking and humorous images on vintage China plates, sparking smiles and engaging conversations during coffee breaks and lunches.

The nautical theme takes center stage on the first floor. Barny Durham’s double mural of King’s Cross, with its canal and canal boats, vividly captures the area’s maritime spirit. On the other side of the floor, a historical theme emerges through nostalgic posters of cities that can be reached by train. Giant circles along the corridor evoke the feeling of being in a boat, peering through portholes.

The second floor celebrates the East End’s heritage and the poetry of London. Artist Lucy Oates created a mural based on Cockney rhyming slang, with text provided by Landmark project manager Charlotte Stewart. This unique piece, with words of varying sizes and hidden messages, prompts reflection on language and its evolution. Sam Wadsworth’s cut-out flowers, lining the corridor, pay homage to London’s vibrant flower markets, further igniting conversation.

Golden Threads and Mathematical Symmetry are the themes of the third floor, adorned with Debbie Smyth’s artistic creations. The fourth floor, dedicated to the lighthouse itself, showcases Marina Renee Cemmick’s mural of a diving woman and maritime ropes transformed into a railway track, representing “Adventures of the British Isles.”
