Fitzrovia, a vibrant district in the heart of London, is a place that always makes my heart beat a little faster. It’s one of my favorite spots to indulge in delicious food, enjoy a refreshing drink, and discover hidden gems. Despite its central location, I find myself returning to Fitzrovia more often than I plan, but it’s always for a good reason—after all, calories don’t just magically vanish! Nestled between Oxford Street to the south and Euston Road to the north, with Bloomsbury to the east and Marylebone to the west, Fitzrovia truly occupies the epicenter of London.
Just steps away from the bustling shops around Oxford Circus and iconic cultural landmarks like the British Museum, Fitzrovia is the perfect place to refuel after a shopping spree or grab a coffee before delving into history.
While most of the streets are broad and well-trodden, you’ll also find numerous hidden alleys and charming mews, each waiting to be explored.
A Stroll Through Fitzrovia’s Heart: Charlotte Street
I always start my Fitzrovia adventures on Charlotte Street, a road that’s beloved by locals and visitors alike.
This stretch, between Goodge Street and Percy Street, is packed with an incredible concentration of fantastic restaurants, making it a foodie’s paradise.
Add to the mix the colorful buildings, historic pub facades, and vibrant atmosphere, and you’ve got a place brimming with charm.
And let’s not forget the Charlotte Street Hotel, a truly exceptional place to stay in London.
Beyond the Streets: Hidden Treasures Await
But Fitzrovia isn’t just about its streets. There are hidden gems tucked away in every corner. The pedestrianized lanes of Colville Place and Charlotte Place are narrow and inviting, offering distinctly different experiences.
Colville Place is home to a row of colorful doors and lush greenery, leading to the secret garden oasis of Crabtree Fields. Meanwhile, Charlotte Place boasts a collection of restaurants and cafes, offering delicious food and al fresco dining.
Don’t forget the intriguing passages! The narrow alleys of Percy Passage and Newman Passage connect Charlotte Street to Newman Street, offering a glimpse into old London’s hidden back lanes, with their charming brick facades.
Not far away, Marylebone Passage provides another atmospheric escape from the modern city, while Warren Mews, with its picturesque charm, is arguably Fitzrovia’s most photographed street.
Culinary Delights: A Feast for the Senses
But the true treasure of Fitzrovia lies in its diverse culinary scene. From Aussie breakfasts at Lantana to creative cocktails at Shochu Lounge, the area offers something delicious for every taste and time of day.
Between meals and drinks, you’ll find plenty to savor. An afternoon tea at the Sanderson hotel is the perfect indulgence, while The Attendant, a quirky café housed in an old Victorian loo, is the perfect spot for a unique coffee experience.
As evening settles, the historic ambiance of the Fitzroy Tavern transports you back to the days when literary giants like Dylan Thomas, Augustus John, and George Orwell were regulars. I’m quickly becoming a regular myself, but I know there’s much more of Fitzrovia to discover.
