The Madeira Terrace, originally a covered promenade and viewing platform, was built to attract tourists from London when the railway line opened in the late 19th century. This stunning structure, stretching over half a mile, is the longest cast iron structure in Britain, boasting over six tonnes of cast iron in each of its 151 arches. However, years of harsh weather have taken their toll, causing cracks and corrosion, ultimately leading to the terrace’s closure in 2014/15.
A New Chapter for Madeira Terrace
This restoration project aims to breathe life back into this cherished landmark. The initial phase focuses on restoring 40 arches, a significant portion of the structure, located between the Royal Crescent steps and the Madeira Terrace Shelter Hall.
